Publications
The Illinois Natural History Survey began publishing in 1861 with Transactions of the Illinois Natural History Society Volume 1, which contained articles “useful and interesting to the citizens and schools of Illinois, with a hope that a zeal for the pursuits and studies of Natural History may spring up among our people…” Our current flagship publication is the Illinois Natural History Survey Bulletin. The INHS also publishes other types manuscripts such as books and field guides. Authors considering INHS for those types of manuscripts are strongly encouraged to contact the INHS Publications Committee (cataylor@illinois.edu) early in their manuscript preparation process to discuss interest by INHS and publishing options.
Online Shop
Many books, posters, field guides, and manuals are available for sale in our online shop. Some items also are available through the INHS Amazon Store. Contact the Publications Office at 217-244-2414 or sales@prairie.illinois.edu if you have questions or need more information.
INHS Bulletin
The Illinois Natural History Survey Bulletin has been published continuously since 1876, and is now an online only, open access publication. The Bulletin publishes research papers, conceptual reviews, and monographs on all aspects of natural history and related disciplines, including biodiversity and conservation, ecology, systematics and taxonomy, and wildlife biology and management. We are actively soliciting manuscripts, and authors need not be INHS employees. For more information, please see our submissions page.

The INHS newsletter includes news, announcements, and upcoming events from the Illinois Natural History Survey and is distributed quarterly via email. Subscribe to INHS Reports | Read past issues
INHS Technical Reports
Technical reports are authored by INHS scientists to document the status, stewardship, conservation, and restoration of Illinois’ biotic resources. The reports are used by INHS, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and various agencies to assess needs and formulate policy. Reports may originate from any of the INHS centers and field stations.
INHS Biological Notes
Illinois Natural History Survey Biological Notes published peer-reviewed research findings in a less technical manner at irregular intervals starting in 1933; this series has been discontinued. You can view and download Biological Notes for free via the IDEALS repository.
Circulars
Illinois Natural History Survey Circular was primarily a “how to” publication for home, farm, and garden. The Circular was published from 1918 to 1987. Publication of this series was discontinued in 1995. View and download circulars via the IDEALS repository, or purchase hard copies from our online shop.
