Illinois Natural History Survey - University of Illinois

Outreach

Public education and engagement has been part of the INHS mission for over 150 years. In Springfield, we have contributed to the mission by demonstrating aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish sampling and processing to Lincoln Land Community College and University of Illinois Springfield for several years. Recently, we have expanded our outreach to local daycares where we teach children insect life cycles and show them preserved and live aquatic macroinvertebrates. If possible, we like to take the children to a nearby pond, so they can try to collect macroinvertebrates themselves. We also have participated in programs such as Expanding Your Horizons (weekend workshop for junior high girls interested in math and science) teaching young adults the importance of water quality.
