Over 650 species of plants have been identified at Illinois Beach. The park contains beach, dune, marsh, swale, sand prairie, savanna, and forest. This wide variety of habitats supports the large diversity of plants. The plant community changes as you get farther from the lakeshore, which is explained by ecological succession.
