Bats have:

  • webbed forelimbs that form wings
  • the ability to fly
  • sharp pointy teeth (in Illinois species)
  • an incomplete palate giving the skull a U shaped void (in Illinois species)



There are approximately 1200 species of bat worldwide, with 13 species occuring in Illinois:

  • Little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus)
  • Northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis)
  • Silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans)
  • Eastern pipistrelle or Tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus)
  • Big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus)
  • Eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis)
  • Hoary bat(Lasiurus cinereus)
  • Evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis)
  • Small footed Bat (Myotis leibii)
  • Rafinesque's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) State Endangered
  • Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) Federally Endangered/ State Endangered
  • Southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius) State Endangered
  • Gray bat (Myotis grisescens) Federally Endangered / State Endangered
