My research examines various aspects of avian ecology and behavior with the overarching goal of improving conservation efforts. Specifically, I focus my research on the behavioral mechanisms (e.g., birdsong and extraterritorial movements) used by animals to maximize fitness via extra-pair offspring. Another area of my research involve understanding distributions and habitat requirements of rare, endemic and migratory bird species in order to inform management and conservation strategies. This area concentrates on the development and evaluation of acoustic recording systems to survey bird populations and communities. My work generally involves the study of animals under natural conditions and uses novel technologies for the study of behaviors and for surveying animals. For example, I study bird flight calls during migration using miniaturized microphones mounted on birds, extra-pair mating behavior in birds using automated telemetry systems, and survey bird populations and communities using autonomous acoustic recording systems and detection and classification algorithms. I conduct my field research in the US (Illinois) and Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula), and recently started research in Cuba. I also produce educational materials such as CDs, CD-ROMs, and mobile-device applications of bird songs and soundscapes of Mexico. My latest audio guides are part of the series “Bird Songs of Mexico,” including volumes for Veracruz and Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.
